What is the Intracept Procedure
The Intracept Procedure is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure for patients with vertebrogenic pain. The procedure targets a specific nerve within the vertebra called the basivertebral nerve and has been shown to improve function and relieve pain long-term. The procedure is implant-free, preserving future treatment options for other spine conditions.
Who is a candidate for the Intracept Procedure?
The Intracept procedure is indicated for patients with lumbar degenerative disc disease who have had chronic low back pain for at least 6 months duration, failed to respond to conservative care including physical therapy, chiropractics, spinal injections and medications. MRI findings demonstrate Modic changes which indicates inflammation, edema, disruption and/or fissuring.
Intracept Procedure
With a small (0.5 inch) incision, fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance is used to access the vertebral where the basivertebral nerve lies. Once correct position has been verified, the Intracept Radiofrequency Generator is used to deliver energy (heat) that ablates the basivertebral nerve. This in turn disrupts the transmission of painful nerve signals. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis and patients are discharged home the same day. Patients can expect to resume their regular activities within a week after the procedure.
